Golf Shoes

It would be merely impossible to talk about golf shoes, without writing a little about the history of golf. Golf was invented during the 15th century in Scotland. A pebble was used as the ball and clubs or sticks would serve as the club. After 1750, the game became known as it is today. In 1774, Edinburgh wrote the standardized rules for the game. That was the year of the First Golf Championship in Edinburgh; it was won by a Doctor from Scotland.

When was the first golf shoe worn? The earliest evidence has been seen from an 1893 photograph of two players in New Zealand's First Interprovincial Contest. The players were wearing shoes with hobnails, short nails with large rounded heads.

During a rainy game at the Country Club in Brookline, MA, 1913, during the US Open, a man described how he wore red rubber-soled shoes during the US Open. He slipped during the game on the wet grass and lost. The next year during the 1914 Open, he bought the hobnail shoes, and won!

Another champion golfer wore the hobnail shoes in 1916, making them a trend. He won the Amateur Champions in 1919. By 1919, the standard foot gear for golf became the hobnail shoes. Thanks go out to the men that started the trend that shook the golf world. The game of golf and the putting green would never be the same.

Up until 1982, the spikes on the golf shoe had been metal. The studs then had taken on a makeover, comprising of composition material or rubber. The reason for the change was due to the damage the metal studs were making to the putting green. Superintendents complained the damage to the grass from the shoe was costing them millions of dollars.

More studies began to develop for the golf stud that would not tear up the green. In 1983, four new types of shoes were created to find the best bottom stud. The best low turf damage golf shoe was the 750 small rubber cleats golf shoe with no spikes. Medium turf damage was the 108 studs with small blunt composite material. High turf damage was the 11-12 long, pointed metal spikes.
